MIDPOINT SONNET // SARAH DAVIS

The smell of new graphite freshly sharpened,
Compliment their scratches of inscribed curves.
To this smell and sound my senses hearkened,
And productivity provoked my nerves.
The same wave of emotions every time
On this eager, studious soul they seize.
To eat, to sleep, to talk, to play, to climb
Are but faulty figments that only tease.
My double decade self knows the value
Of higher knowledge, as well as the cost.
A debt of sleepless nights and funds too few
Sputter me forward; ambition is lost.
Savor the journey, they say, and feel blessed-
A task too harsh when all I feel is stressed.
