NEVER SAW IT COMING // AUNDRECE POWELL

Blinded by the fun
of playing with dolls,
of unplanned sleepovers,
of trying on her mother's clothes.
Unknown changes unforeseen.

The unspoken:
pimples, neck rolls, and the
desire
to be like the older girls —
the magical ones
who live two doors down.

The monthly pains,
in her stomach
in her head.
The perfectly timed mood swings.
That stage when
eating one bar of chocolate is never enough;
and one tear turns into many.

When training bras keep nothing in place
and the ropes smack the ground
As hard as she jumps,
her unwanted pain juggles
in her arms.
