PROOF // DANA CULIN

i can remember it was sunny
as i was dragged across the floor
i can’t remember what i’d done, though
i was one year more than four

it must have been the next day
when my back started to hurt
and as i started scratching
blood came seeping through my shirt

my teacher asked me what had happened
i’m sure i told the truth
but to this day, i look back wistfully
to that one time I had proof

because nothing ever came of it
and still i wonder why
the grownups never gave a shit
no matter how much i would cry
